Bali

Rice terraces, cliff temples, and a private pool for the price of a hotel room.

Bali's reputation for villas is earned: a private staffed villa with its own pool costs less here than a decent hotel room in most of Europe, which is why it carries so many honeymoons and milestone birthdays. Ubud inland is rice terraces, temples and yoga; Uluwatu on the southern cliffs has the dramatic ocean views and the clifftop wedding venues; Canggu and Seminyak are the surf-and-restaurant strip; Sidemen and the north are what Bali was twenty years ago. It is a living Hindu island with ceremonies constantly underway, and that is the actual reason to come.

What a week actually costs

Indicative shapes, not quotes — an advisor verifies real prices for your exact dates before anything is offered.

Under $2,500 for the week

Two people in a private pool villa in Ubud or Canggu with breakfast and a driver on call, temples, waterfalls, a cooking class, and the whole week for less than three nights in the Amalfi.

$9,000–22,000

A large staffed villa with a chef and a driver for a group, a clifftop Uluwatu stay, Nusa Penida and Gili day trips, spa days, and a Komodo or Java extension.

$45,000+

A clifftop estate buyout for a wedding, three days of events, guests accommodated and transported, full floral and production, and a Balinese blessing ceremony done properly with the community.

What to watch for

  • South Bali traffic is genuinely bad. Two places that look close on a map can be ninety minutes apart. We build itineraries by driving time, not distance.
  • Many beaches in the south have strong currents and rip tides and are not swimming beaches, whatever the photograph suggests. Pool villas exist for a reason.
  • A legal marriage in Indonesia requires both parties to declare a recognised religion and is genuinely complicated. Nearly every "Bali wedding" is a symbolic ceremony with the legal marriage done at home. Anyone who tells you otherwise is being careless with your marriage.
  • Nyepi, the island's day of silence, shuts everything including the airport for twenty-four hours. We check it against your dates.
