Maui, Kaua‘i & the Big Island

Each island is a different trip. Maui is the classic — resorts, the road to Hana, sunrise on Haleakala. Kaua‘i is the green one, wild and quiet, with the Na Pali coast. The Big Island has active volcanoes, black sand and every climate zone in one place. O‘ahu has Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and the north shore. It is a US state, so no passport and no currency exchange, and that makes it the easiest "big" trip for a first-time or nervous traveller.

Under $4,000 for the week
Two people in a condo rather than a resort, a hire car, snorkelling off the beach, a luau, and cooking breakfast in. Shoulder season.
$14,000–35,000
A family in an ocean-front resort or a private house, a two-island split, a private catamaran and snorkel day, a helicopter over Na Pali, and a chef evening.
$80,000+
A private estate with staff, inter-island charter, a wedding or vow renewal on the sand with full production, and guests hosted.
What to watch for
- Flights are long and days are lost either end. Anything shorter than seven nights spends most of the trip in transit and jet lag.
- Two islands in a week is usually one too many. Inter-island flights eat a day each time.
- Ocean conditions change by season and by shore. Swim where there are lifeguards, and take posted warnings seriously — this is where visitors get hurt.
- Respect for the culture is not decoration. Sacred sites are not photo backdrops, and Lahaina is still recovering from the 2023 fire. Go with a guide who tells you what is appropriate.
