Kruger & the Sabi Sand

Two game drives a day, and the fire lit when you come back.

This is the easiest first safari in Africa: malaria risk is low to seasonal rather than constant, you can drive in from Johannesburg or fly a short hop, and the private reserves bordering Kruger — Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush — have no fence between them and the park, so the animals move freely while the vehicle numbers stay controlled. A private reserve is why people see leopard here and not elsewhere. Full-board lodges are the norm: rooms, all meals, drinks, two guided drives a day and laundry are usually one price, which makes the real cost far easier to hold onto than a city trip.

What a week actually costs

Indicative shapes, not quotes — an advisor verifies real prices for your exact dates before anything is offered.

Under $2,500 for three nights, two people

A well-run lodge just outside the park boundary in green season, or a self-drive in Kruger staying in the national park rest camps. Genuinely good, genuinely affordable, and the animals do not know what you paid.

$8,000–20,000

Three or four nights in a Sabi Sand private lodge in dry season, all-inclusive, private vehicle so the drive is yours and stops when you say, and a light-aircraft transfer instead of the road.

$45,000+

A private villa within a reserve for a family — your own guide, tracker, vehicle, chef and house — plus charter flights and a Cape Town or Indian Ocean leg attached.

What to watch for

  • Three nights is the minimum that makes sense. Two nights is really one full day of drives, and weather can take it.
  • Ask about malaria prophylaxis with a travel clinic six weeks out. Risk is seasonal and low in winter, not zero.
  • Light aircraft transfers have hard luggage limits, usually around 20kg in a soft bag. We tell you before you pack, not at the airstrip.
  • Children have minimum ages at many lodges, and some exclude under-12s from drives entirely. Family safaris need the lodge picked around the youngest child.
