The Serengeti & Maasai Mara
The migration is real, and it does not care about your calendar.
This is the migration everyone has seen filmed: roughly two million wildebeest and zebra moving in a loop across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. It crosses a border, which is why it is one destination on the ground and two countries on paperwork. Camps here are often genuine tented camps — canvas, bucket showers at the modest end, extraordinary comfort at the top — and many are mobile, following the herds. Pair it with Zanzibar for a beach week, or with Ngorongoro Crater, which is a collapsed volcano with wildlife living inside it and unlike anywhere else.
What a week actually costs
Indicative shapes, not quotes — an advisor verifies real prices for your exact dates before anything is offered.
Under $4,000 for four nights, two people
Green season, a good small camp, a shared game vehicle, group-joining transfers. Far less money than high season and the animals are still there.
$14,000–35,000
Migration season, a mobile camp positioned for the crossings, a private vehicle and guide, light-aircraft hops between the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Mara, then Zanzibar.
$60,000+
A private camp exclusive to your party, a balloon flight at dawn, your own guide for the whole trip, charters throughout, and a conservancy stay where vehicle numbers are capped.
What to watch for
- The migration does not run to a schedule. Anyone who promises you river crossings on a fixed date is selling you something they cannot deliver. We position you where the odds are best and say so plainly.
- Kenya and Tanzania are separate visas, separate park fees and sometimes a border crossing on foot. Build it in.
- Yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your routing, and malaria prophylaxis is genuinely necessary here. Travel clinic, six weeks out.
- Park fees are a large, fixed, per-person, per-day share of the cost and they are not negotiable. We show them as their own line so you know what is lodge and what is government.
