Napa & Sonoma
America’s wine country, and a very easy place to be spoiled.
Napa is the famous one, more polished and more expensive; Sonoma is larger, more rural and better value, with the same quality in the glass. The real skill here is pacing — three wineries a day is one too many, and the tastings that matter are the small appointment-only ones, not the bus stops. A driver is not a luxury, it is the only responsible way to do it. Add Healdsburg for the town square, or the Sonoma coast for cold Pacific beaches an hour away.
What a week actually costs

Under $2,000 for the weekend
Two people in a Sonoma inn midweek in winter, three or four tasting appointments, a driver for the tasting days, and a picnic lunch among the vines.
$8,000–20,000
A vineyard house for a group, a private car throughout, cellar tastings and library verticals, a chef dinner at the house, a hot air balloon at dawn.
$70,000+
A winery buyout for a wedding or milestone — ceremony among the vines, a long table dinner, guest accommodation and transport handled.
What to watch for
- Never drive yourself between tastings. A driver costs a fraction of what a DUI costs, and it is the single most common mistake made here.
- The best small producers are appointment-only and often booked weeks ahead. Walk-ins get the tour buses.
- Wildfire season runs roughly July to October and can bring smoke and road closures. Insure it and stay flexible.
- Shipping wine home has state-by-state rules. Some states will not accept it at all. Ask before you buy a case.
