Santorini sells the most photographed sunset in Europe, and Oía is genuinely worth seeing once. But the islands around it — Paros, Naxos, Milos, Sifnos — give you the same water and the same food with far more room and far lower prices, which is why we often build an itinerary that spends two nights on the caldera and five somewhere calmer.

What to watch for
- The meltemi wind blows hard in July and August and cancels ferries. Never connect a ferry to a same-day flight.
- Caldera properties mean hundreds of steps and donkey paths. Luggage and mobility both need planning.
- Santorini has almost no flat ground and no natural water supply — everything is shipped or desalinated, which is why it costs what it costs.
- Cruise-ship days turn Oía impassable. We build the itinerary around the port schedule.
